Crook claim; Crook and Western Mine


A former underground Au-Pb-Cu-Zn-Ag mine located 3 miles East of the Hassayampa at an altitude of 7,000 feet. Started before 1881 and reactivated shortly before 1902 by the Pan American Mining Co.

Mineralization is a gold-quartz vein from 1 to 4 feet wide that is traceable for more than 1 mile. The vein strikes N.10ºW. and dips 75ºW. It occurs in gneissoid Bradshaw Granite and follows, on the hanging wall, a persistent 15 foot thick dike of dark green rock. The vein is a narrow stringer to 4 feet wide and averages 1½. The longest ore shoot is 60 feet long by 20 feet wide. The vein filling consists of coarse-grained, grayish-white quartz.

Area structures include foliation in Precambrian rocks that trends N35E to N45E. Dikes and veins parallel the foliation.

Workings include 670 feet of shafts and 850 feet of tunnels; a 100 foot deep shaft (1934) & a long tunnel 160 feet below the outcrop. Worked to 220 feet. Early workings were open cuts to about 40 feet deep over 4,700 feet along the vein. Total output was some $250,000 of metal (period values).
