The Quantock Hills National Landscape is a compact but striking upland landscape in west Somerset, rising abruptly from the surrounding lowlands to form a distinctive ridge of hills overlooking the Bristol Channel. Designated as England’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956 and renamed a National Landscape in 2023, the Quantock Hills hold a special place in the history of landscape protection. They are valued for their open heathland, wooded combes, pasture, and sweeping views, as well as for their strong cultural associations, most notably with the Romantic poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth.

Geologically, the Quantock Hills are composed mainly of Devonian sandstones and slates, with older volcanic rocks forming the core of the ridge. These hard, resistant rocks give rise to the hills’ distinctive upland character, steep slopes, and narrow valleys, while surrounding younger sediments form gentler lowlands. The geology has strongly influenced soils, vegetation, and land use, supporting a mix of heathland, woodland, and grazing rather than intensive agriculture.
