The Surrey Hills National Landscape is a diverse and highly valued protected landscape in south-east England, covering much of rural Surrey and extending into parts of adjoining counties. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1958 and renamed a National Landscape in 2023, it is recognised for its varied scenery, strong sense of tranquillity, and exceptional accessibility, lying close to London while retaining a predominantly rural character. The landscape encompasses chalk downland, wooded hills, heathland, deep valleys, and historic villages, with a long history of settlement and land management.
Geologically, the Surrey Hills are defined by a complex sequence of Cretaceous and Paleogene rocks that give rise to striking contrasts in landform and soil. The North Downs chalk escarpment forms the backbone of the area, while to the south the Lower Greensand Group creates a parallel ridge of sandy hills, including Leith Hill, the highest point in south-east England. Between and beyond these ridges lie clay vales and heathlands developed on impermeable clays and sands. This varied geology has influenced patterns of agriculture, woodland, and settlement, as well as supporting small-scale quarrying of chalk, greensand, and stone for building and road construction. Although there is no major metalliferous mining heritage, the geological diversity of the Surrey Hills underpins its rich biodiversity, distinctive scenery, and long-established cultural landscape, making it one of the most geologically varied National Landscapes in southern England.
