Hochwald 749m is a mountain on the border of Saxony in southeastern Germany and Bohemia in the Czech Republic. It is one of the highest in the Lusatian/Zittau ranges, has two peaks, the southern main summit (through which the state border extends), and the north summit, which is 370 metres away. Due to the visually appealing views from the mountain, it has earned the nickname Aussichtsturm des Zittauer Gebirges (lit. Lookout Tower of the Zittau Mountains).

The summit of the Hochwald consists of phonolite, in more recent works also as trachyte. The volcanic body belong to the Central European Volcanic Province (CEVP). Is unclear whether the magma ever reached the surface here or got stuck in the surrounding rock beforehand. Later they were exposed by uplift and subsequent erosion because they are harder than the surrounding rock (relief inversion). The surroundings and the lower slopes of the Hochwald consist of sandstones from the Cretaceous period (Upper Cretaceous, Coniacian), which reach thicknesses of a thousand meters. Inclusions (xenoliths) in the volcanic rock itself prove that the sandstone is underlain by Lusatian granite, which can only be found further north.
