Geological and geomorphological processes in the formation of a dolerite swarm

Molten rock of magma is generated far below the earth's surface and rises because it is slightly less dense than the surrounding rock and may erupt on the surface, forming a volcano.

Sills are flat-lying lave sheets injected into flat layered sedimentary rocks. Sill can be reached by several kilometres in thickness and can cover vast regions.

At higher levels in the earth's crust, rocks are cooler and much stiffer or even brittle. Therefore, magma moves differently. Pressure in the magma chamber causes the lava moves upwards and be injected into cracks and fissures and solidify in the cracks to form what is called a dyke. Dykes can vary in thickness from cm to tens or hundreds of meters and can extend over short distances or even kilometres.

The giant playground displays a couple of impressively weathered dolerite dykes which form part of the Keetmanshop-Dolerite Complex (Dolerite Swarm)
