Cubic pyrite of millimeter to centimeter size, usually with a patina of superficial alteration (goethite and Fe oxides), more rarely it can be found of a brass color. The crystals were formed when the rock was still frankly malleable, the deformations after the formation of the crystals caused a void that is often filled with secondary calcite of no interest. The crystals outcrop in dark gray shales (often called phyllites) with subordinate gray arenaceous layers of medium grain size, this member is part of San Bartolomeo Flysch, dated Hauterivian sup. – Campanian sup.
To reach the outcrop it is sufficient to take a path on the side of the road, which is located just after the bridge (south-west), this leads to the bed of the Argentina River, the greatest concentration of crystals is just upstream of the bridge, on both rocky banks.
It is advisable to visit the site in the summer when the river level is lower and it is less dangerous to cross. The rock is not very hard so a basic sledge hammer of 1 Kg and a chisel are sufficient to dig with ease.
