Mine de Mésage
The Mésage mine is an old 19th-century iron exploitation, located on the Saint-Pierre-de-Mésage territory, just at the end of the Romanche valley, 25 km south-east of Grenoble.
The first workings began around 1820. Then, in 1848, the "Fond-Gillarde" gallery, which cut the siderite vein after 160m, was dug.
The vein has been exploited during the second part of the 19th century, with some temporary interruptions. The workings remained quite small, and the western research gallery didn't cut the vein anymore.
The vein workings are 40 m long and about 20~25 m high, with a shaft that leads to the surface.
The mine is abandoned for a long time now but became famous due to the mineralogical treasures found: world-class siderite (lustrous, greenish-brown rhombohedrons reaching more than 15 cm) associated with quartz & pyrite. The siderite can also show other habits, and various colors, depending on its alteration degree.
The paragenesis also provided good-quality specimens of lustrous tetrahedrite (up to several cms), bournonite, pyrite (dodecahedrons up to 5 cm) and quartz (sometimes as sceptres or twinned).
Also noteworthy are ankerite, calcite, baryte, and apatite.
