A salt(halite)-S-gypsum occurrence located in the SW¼NE¼NW¼ sec. 29, T9S, R10W, LM, 12 miles W of Lake Charles, on private land. Discovered in 1867 by the Louisiana Petroleum and Coal Oil Company. Owned & operated by the Union Texas Petroleum (1975) and by the Pittsburgh Plate Glass (PPG), Incorporated (1975). Operated by the Union Sulphur Company, Allied Chemical PPG Incorporated (1894-1924). Production occurred overall during the period 1894-1970 (1894-1924, 1966-1970).

Mineralization is a salt dome (diapir) (Mineral occurrence model information: Model code: 255; USGS model code: 35a.7 (35ag); Deposit model name: Salt-dome sulfur), hosted in the Middle Jurassic Louann Limestone and salt. The ore body has a depth-to-top of 152.4 meters and a depth-to-bottom of 457.2 meters. The depth to the caprock is 390 feet, to the sulfur it is 500 feet and to the salt it is 1,460 feet. Salt volume is 1.1 cubic miles to 10,000 feet. The caprock is 75 acres in area and 1,100 feet thick. Local alteration includes biogenic alteration of anhydrock to limestone. local rocks include Prairie Terraces.

Local geologic structures include a piercement salt dome.

Workings included bore holes and surface infrastructure for the Frasch production of sulfur. Herman Frasch first successfully tested his method of solution mining sulfur here in 1894.
