A graphite occurrence/mine located 9 miles NW of Burnet on private land (fee ownership). Discovered and first produced in 1913. Owned by the Southwestern Graphite Company, a division of the Joseph Dixon Crucible Company, Jersey City, New Jersey (100%) (1983). The USGS MRDS database stated accuracy for this locality is 10 meters.

The Southwestern Graphite Mine consists of 3 separate ore bodies lying along a stratum of graphite schist. For purposes of evaluation, these ore bodies are treated as a single reserve. The ore body grades are similar enough; however, so that no changes in concentrate grade would be anticipated as a result of mining a different ore body. Information on the property is sketchy. The parent company (Dixon) refused to release any data on the property for reasons of company policy. Most of the data used were from 2 U.S. Bureau of Mines studies of the mine done in 1976.

A graphite deposit hosted in schist. The ore body strikes N65E and dips 80N at a thickness of 46 meters, a width of 50 meters and a length of 1,000 meters and with a depth-to-top of 0 meters, covering an area of 30.4 HA. Ore body No. 1 is disseminated & tabular. The primary mode of origin was sedimentation and the secondary mode of origin was metamorphism. Primary ore control was lithology. Wallrock alteration is intense (other). The thickness of the mineralization reflects the depth of mineralization to about 50 feet below the level of Clear Creek. The extent of mineralization at depth is not known. The dimensions given encompass all three ore bodies as well as the less mineralized rock between them. Local rocks include the Packsaddle Schist.

Regional geologic structures include the Llano uplift.

Workings include surface openings comprised of open pits.

Production was 36,641 metric tons of graphite (1961-1979).
