Geologically, most of the municipality is underlain by recent alluvial and fluvial sediments. In places—particularly toward the northern parts of the area—Pliocene volcaniclastic sediments and volcanic tuffs are also present. To the west, interlayered metamorphic rocks (marbles and calc-silicate schists) crop out, and some researchers propose that these exposures may represent the easternmost parts of the Pelagonian Zone, revealed as a tectonic window beneath the Jurassic Almopia ophiolitic cover. A section of these marbles can be seen at an abandoned limestone quarry located about one kilometer west of the village of Sevastiana.
