The deposit was claimed in 1890, and a few years later sold to Chr. Anker who took out 1450 tons of ore in the periods 1895-97 and in 1907. Due to the high titanium-content, the ore was not usable.
In 1934 the mining rights were taken over by Christiania Spigerverk, and in 1935 two shafts with a total length of ca. 50-60m were driven into the deposit at Nedre Hjellsand.
The ore is a coarse-grained mix of massive magnetite, ilmenite and pyrrhotite. Samples showed values of ca. 53% Fe, 4-5% TiO2 and 1.5-2% S.
The adit is not recognizable on the LIDAR map.
At Øvre Hjellsand, ca. 650m NNW of Nedre Hjellsand, at 68.8909510,14.8913570, several small prospects can be recognized.
