Yellow Aster Butte Quartz Occurrence; Keep Cool Meadows
A gold prospect on the ridge south of Yellow Aster Butte. The ore occurs in quartz veins and pods of serpentine in quartzite that has been intruded with diorite along. Quartz crystals 1/8" to 4" long are reported to occur in pockets in the veins. It was developed by several small adits and pits and a small mill.
Tectonics: Cascade Volcanic Arc
Deposit: 1-in.- to 4-ft-thick quartz veins traceable at surface for several hundred feet. Several veins are intensely folded and most have been faulted. The quartz is unusually vuggy. The gold and silver values are found in iron oxide stained quartz; gold is also present in small lenticular bodies of serpentine and talc.
Deposit type: Polymetallic veins
Development: In 1940's, an unsuccessful attempt was made to recover free gold from serpentine using a small homemade mill.
