Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Saline Ebensee; Sudkessel Ebensee; Sudbecken Ebensee; Salt works
From 1596 on Emperor Rudolf II had a salt evaporation pond erected near the settlement, supplied with brine being delivered via a 40 km (25 mi) long pipeline from the salt mines around Hallstatt.
NOTE: Twinned brownish to colourless gypsum crystals up to 5 cm, which grew in several ponds and were removed during deconstruction work from the ponds' concrete walls, can be found in collections. Many hundreds of specimens were sold at local mineral shows in the late 1980s (Wallenta, 1988; Helmut Dobler, pers. comm. to Uwe Kolitsch in May 2022).
