A former clay pit with a brick factory. Mineralisation in Rupelian (between 33.9 and 27.82 Ma ago) clay.

In July 1875, Jean-Baptiste Nijs received permission to operate a brickyard on 2 plots of land along the current Professor Scharpélaan.

In the 1930s, this company grew into the Bonte-Van Rompaey brickworks.

In the late 1970s, the activity ended, and the installations were demolished.

The owners of the clay pit applied for a permit to turn the pit into a municipal waste dump in November 1974, and, despite some objections from residents, a permit was issued in March 1975. The pit was filled with household and industrial chemical waste, resulting in a decade-long period of stench and rat infestations. Around 1985, the waste dump was completely covered up. Only the former brick factory's chimney remains standing, the sole witness.

When the pit was active, gypsum crystals could be found — as groups of up to 25 cm with a lot of twins and sometimes fourlings — in the NE corner of the pit at a depth of about 3 m (ca. 10 ft) below the surface.
