Tori Island; Izu-Torishima Volcano
An uninhabited, 2.5km-wide island with an active volcano approximately 600 km south of city of Tokyo, politically belonging to Tokyo prefecture.
The island (some 4.8 km2) is the above water portion of a large submarine volcano.
The island is also within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.
The Izu-Torishima volcano which dominates the island is considered an active volcano.
Explosions in 1901-1902; ash and lava eruptions in 1939.
Last eruptions of the Izu-Torishima volcano was: 2002; an ash cloud was produced in August 2002.
