The Promontory of Portofino, located at about 25 km from Genoa, is characterised by a ridge, stopping the continuity of the coast between Sestri Levante and Genova and dividing the Tigullio Gulf from the Paradiso Gulf.
The Promontory is formed by two geological formations, known as "Calcare del Monte Antola" and "Conglomerato di Portofino". The former formation is a flyschoid deposit consisting of limestones, calcarenites, marls, marly limestones and interlayers of clayey shales with Helmintoidea labyrinthica; the latter is a polymictic conglomerate in which the clasts, varying in size from a few centimetres to metre, are made of prevalent sedimentary rocks (limestones, marly limestones, and sandstones) and subordinate magmatic and metamorphic rocks (metacherts, marbles, gneiss, gabbros, and metabasalts). Clasts made entirely of calcite are also present.
