The White Rock Quarry is an active quarry for building stone and aggregate located in Clay Center, Sandusky County, Ohio. The quarry straddles over the NE ¼ of section 16 and the SE ¼ of section 9. The rocks exposed in the quarry belong to the Lockport Dolomite and Greenfield Dolomite on the north edge of Clay Center.

It is unknown when the quarry first opened, but a record from Bowland (1896, p. 607) indicated that Alfred C. Johnson was one of the earliest superintendents of the quarry and he had accepted the position in 1880. At the time the White Rock Quarry was operated by the Toledo White Lime Company.

In 1905, the Kelley Island Lime and Transport Company purchased the White Rock Quarry from the Toledo White Lime Company. Orton and Peppel (1906, p. 228-229) noted that the although Kelley Island Lime and Transport Co., mainly produced “high-calcium lime”, this was their first purchase of a quarry to produce dolomite lime. At the time of this purchase the White Rock Quarry had 16 operating kilns. For the next fifty years, the Kelley Island Lime & Transport Co. operated the White Rock Quarry. It was during this time that some of the major specimens of fluorite and celestine were being preserved from the quarry and into public and private collections. Many of them can be seen today.

Mitch Gunnel’s Rocks and Minerals article on the White Rock Quarry (1933) erroneously stated that the locality was operated by the Kelly Island Stone Company. This confusion may have arose as early topographic maps of Clay Center indicated the locality as such (Besse, W., August 15, 2016).

In 1955, Kelley Island was beginning to struggle financially and sold its assets to Basic Refractories, Inc. Basic Refractories, Inc. continued to quarry out the dolomite stone (Directory of Ohio Mine Operators, 1965). In 1969, Edward Kraemer & Sons, Inc. was founded and shortly thereafter acquired the White Rock Quarry from Basic, Incorporated. They continued operating the quarry until 1994-1995, when control of the quarry went under Stoneco Inc., a subsidiary of S.E. Johnson Company. Mineral collecting still continued under the management of both Basic, Inc. and Edward Kraemer & Sons, Inc.

In 2003, S.E. Johnson merged with the Shelly Company, which was then purchased by Oldcastle Materials. The quarries formerly operated by Stoneco Inc., in Ohio became part of the Shelly Company umbrella, which still continues to operate the quarry.

A major find of brown fluorite, white bladed celestine and yellow calcite occurred at the White Rock Quarry between 2006 and 2007 when blasting opened a large void of crystals (Harman, 2016).
