Erto e Casso, located in the Vajont Valley, is the westernmost commune of Friuli Venezia Guilia, known for the Vajont Dam disaster occurred on 9 October 1963.

The landslide that originated the disaster occurred on the southern limb of the Erto syncline, which is dipping 30° to 50° towards the north-northeast and north, deeply reworking a former paleo-landslide covering the northern slope of Monte Toc. The sliding surface is localised within the Middle-Upper Jurassic Fonzaso formation, a sequence of thin-stratified limestones with thin (0.1-5 cm) intercalations of clays.
