Col di Foglia or Col de Foia is characterised by the presence of pre-Hercynian metamorphic rocks (mainly phyllites) and Permian sedimentary rocks.

Red beds of the Upper Permian Val Gardena Sandstone formation crop out along the northern slope of the hill in private land. These rocks contain geodic cavities filled with aragonite, maybe the most known mineral of the Agordo area (see also the localities Castagneto, Agordo, and Val del Mus, Voltago Agordino). Aragonite appears as colourless to white acicular crystals to 1-2 cm long in geodic cavities, varying in size from a few millemetres to a few tens of centimetres. Cavities with aragonite occasionally also in phyllites. Tiny crystals of dolomite are often observed inside the geodic cavities.

Pyrite cubic crystals up to 1 cm on edge are found in carbonaceous and chloritic phyllites. Large pyrite cubes, attaining 4-5 cm on edge, were found in a mineralised vein in the hydroelectric tunnel dug under Col di Foglia.

Furthermore, Col di Foglia is an important fossil locality. The Cambrian acritarchs found in the greenschist-facies black metapelites of Col di Foglia represent the oldest unquestionable biostratigraphic dating of the entire Alps, as well as of the Italian peninsula.
