Adbar Mine
The Maroco Mine (Secs 4 & 5 T46N R29W) began in 1918 as an underground working called the Adbar Underground Mine. It was soon converted to an open pit strip mine by Marquette Ore Company (MAROCO) and ore began shipping in 1921. It was eventually taken over by the Hanna Coal and Ore Corporation. It became one of the largest producers on the North Cuyuna Range, producing over 3.5 million tons of ore. The ore worked was primarily the thick-bedded chert facies of the Proterozoic Trommald Formation. The open pit displayed excellent exposures of complex faulted drag folds on the limb of a major syncline. Ore was primarily secondarily enriched hematite and goethite with local rich pockets of manganese minerals. Secondary manganese mineralization continued along fractures into the underlying quartzite. As of 2023 the pit is flooded and much of the property is owned by the Minnesota DNR. Literature from the DNR erroneously refers to this as the Morocco Mine.
