Painter Springs

The mineralization seen in the Painter Spring area reflects igneous and metamorphic occurrences related to a Jurassic-age (~163-million-year old) granite intrusion (sill) that crops out at the base of the limestone sequence forming Notch Peak. According to the Utah Geological Survey:

Notch peak is composed of 500-million-year old limestones and dolomites of the Notch Peak, Orr, and Weeks Formations. Following the pattern found across the Basin and Range Province from western Utah to eastern California, a north-south oriented high-angle fault uplifted the mountain front on the west side of Notch Peak. This uplift allowed erosion to carve the peak’s great cliff.

Millard County Travel states that garnets, pyrite, muscovite, quartz and other interesting rocks can be found in the Painter Spring locality just northwest of Notch Peak. To get to Painter Spring, take US Hwy 6/50 west from Delta for about 87 km (54 miles) and turn north on Tule Valley/Painter Springs Road for about 20.7 km (almost 13 miles) to a spur road heading east toward the mountain front. Follow the spur up the alluvial fan for 1.6 km (1 mile) to a fork in the road and bear to the left. A high clearance or four-wheel drive vehicle is needed to continue about 1.6 km (1 mile) to the mouth of a canyon near the springs. Some specimens can be found in the canyon bottom and foothills, but for best results, search for pegmatites and contact zones with the carbonate rocks.
