Big Jim-Aztec ore shoot


A former Ag-Au-Mo-Cu-Pb (trace) occurrence/mine located in the S½ sec. 16, T19N, R20W, G&SRM, immediately NE of the Grey Eagle and Black Eagle claims on the Tom Reed vein, and about ¾ mile SE of Oatman, on Bureau of Land Management administered land. Owned by the Big Jim Mining Company; and the United Eastern Company (1917 - ). Owned by the United Eastern Mining Company (1922). Owned by Big Jim Mines Incorporated, Arizona (1930). Started in 1916, reopened in 1933 with ultimate closure in early 1934. The USGS MRDS database stated accuracy for this locality is 1,000 meters.

Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in rhyolite. The ore body is lenticular, long & narrow, striking N35W and dipping 70NE at a thickness of 10.67 meters, width of 137.16 meters, a length of 457.2 meters, depth-to-top of 76.2 meters and a depth-to-bottom of 198.12 meters. Controls for ore emplacement included fracturing. The Mallory fault throws the upper portion of the vein downward and to the SW, displacing the Big Jim-Aztec ore shoot to form the Gray Eagle ore shoot. Ore shoots are lenticular, long & narrow. Faulting and reopening of veins was necessary to form this ore. Associated rocks include the Pliocene Gold Road Latite. Local rocks include Middle Miocene to Oligocene volcanic rocks.

Regional geologic structures include a NNW- to WNW-trending vein and fault system in Tertiary volcanic rocks.

Workings include underground openings with a length of 1,828.8 meters and an overall depth of 228.6 meters. Ore extended from the first level to the sixth level.

Production statistics: Year: 1942 (period = 1934-1942): ^0.17 ounce Ag/ton (5 grams/metric ton); 0.22 ounce Au/ton (6 grams/metric ton). Production from the early 1900's is included in U.S. Bureau of Mines figures for the United Eastern. Later production under the name Big Jim includes some production from the Grey Eagle. Produced 220,552 tons of ore.

Analytical data results: $12/ton Au (1931 values). The average grade of the vein above 600 feet was $19/ton; at 700 feet = $5.40/ton; at 800 feet = 4.80/ton (period values). Au:Ag = 2:1.
