Vote for your favorite mineral in #MinCup26! - Sphalerite vs. Anorthite
Both zinc ore Sphalerite and calcium plagioclase feldspar Anorthite have perfect cleavage that will split cleanly if you hit them with a hammer, but only one can claim a larger split of your votes!

A Mn-Fe-Ba-Al-silica mine located in secs. 2 & 11, T4S, R4E (MDM), 3.4 km (2.1 miles) S of Castle Rock (coordinates of record), about 13 road miles from Tracy. Discovered and first production in 1867. Owned by E. L. Lake,et al (100.00%), Lakewood, Ohio 44107 (1975). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.

NOTE: Yale Peabody GNIS database, based on USGS topo maps, places this mine in San Joaquin Co. (area is near county line).

Mineralization is hosted in Late Cretaceous Franciscan Complex, Calaveras Group chert. The ore body strikes N45W and dips 75W at a thickness of 25 meters, a width of 35 meters, and a length of 250 meters. 2 ore beds lie in chert more than 200 feet in thickness which strikes NW and dips from 30 to 90 SW. The beds are folded in places. The 2 ore bodies are 125 feet apart. The lowest or East one is 800 feet long, with a maximum thickness of 35 feet, and consists of 1 to 16 feet of high-grade ore at its base with 2 to 30 feet of disseminated ore above. The upper ore body is 125 feet long, 100 feet maximum width, and 4 feet maximum thickness. 2 steep-angle faults have caused the black between the faukts to be displled 200 feet to the W. There are many minor faults present. The ore passes into carbonate and bementite at the lower level.

The ore bodies are 1.) sedimentary and lenticular in fotrm, and 2.) a shear zone. The primary mode of origin was sedimentation and the secondary mode was hydrothermal emplacement. Primary ore control was bedding and secondary was fracturing. There is no wallrock alteration. The iron ore is comprised of red, earthy hematite as shale. Local rocks include Franciscan Complex, unit 1 (Coast Ranges).

Workings include unspecified underground openings.

Analytical data results: Average 18% Mn (unsorted).
