The monzogranite complex of Brignogan-Plouescat extends over 30 km along the coast of the Channel, from Guissény, to the west, to Moguériec, in Sibiril, to the east. It is made up of two distinct lobes separated by the bay of Goulven. The western lobe (Brignogan) presents a clear porphyritic facies of white-gray granite forming enormous chaos of boulders in fields or along the maritime coast (see Brignogan-Plages). The latter is still even represented on the western part of the eastern lobe at Plouescat, which corresponds to the central part of the entire massif. The east of the eastern lobe has a finer facies, richer in muscovite, which is distinguished by the names of Cléder and Moguériec monzogranite massifs. This white-gray granite with a very slight bluish shade, homogeneous, outcrops only for 2 km along the coast, from An Amied beach to Kerradénec. It essentially forms scattered boulders in the fields, sometimes larger granitic chaos or other outcrops in old small abandoned quarries. (Chauris & al)
By the end of the 19th century Cléder was considered the "capital of granite". Cléder granite, apart its delicate hue, ranging from bluish white to light gray, is hard, very resistant to weathering, does not rust and offers an excellent shaping. It is one of the most beautiful granite in the Finistère department. The quarries were once very numerous. At the end of the 19th century, in Cléder, a dozen sites occupied more than 200 granite cutters. The extraction was facilitated by the presence at the outcrop of huge boulders released from the sand and silt cover, both inland and on the sea coast. (Chauris & al)
