Black Knife Mine


The Black Knife Mine, known as the Black Knife group in the 1880s and then subsequently the Prospector’s Delight Mine, was an underground mining operation with one known shaft. It is located approximately 5 km (3 miles) E of the small town of Winston and 40 km (25 miles) NW of the city of Truth or Consequences. Initial production took place in 1885 and overall output was considered to be of a small size. Subsurface depth reaches a maximum of 53 m (175 ft) and extended 46 m (150 ft) in length. The ore mined was composed of chlorargyrite (silver ore), malachite (copper ore) and gold, with waste material consisting primarily of calcite and quartz. The last year of production was 1961.

Structure: Slightly folded sedimentary rocks.

Alteration: Silicified limestone along contact with porphyry, sometimes with garnet.

Deposit: Deposits occur as pods and shoots along limestone-porphyry contact in cross fractures located mainly in the tops of slightly folded limestone. Ore shoots are generally about 2 ft wide, from 3 ft To 20 ft long, and pitch down the dip of the beds. Three patented claims covering about 60 acres.

Discovery year: 1880's.

Geology: Regional geology as Sierra Cuchillo district.

Rock formation(s): Magdalena Group.

Ore(s): Mineralised solutions emanating from a shallow igneous mass were localised in fractures and by host rock replacement.
