A former small surface and underground Au-Ag-Pb-Zn-Cu mine on 5 unpatented claims, located in center of East SE ¼ sec. 5, T.22S., R.10E., 2¼ miles S of Arivaca. Produced 1927-1941. Owned at times, or in part, by the Arivaca Gold Mining & Milling Co.; the Ajax Mining Co.; and the Oreona Mining Co. Operated by Ms Evelyn Watkins of Tucson (1965).
Mineralization is argentiferous and auriferous galena, and other sulfides in irregular, lensing quartz-fissure veins (4 veins, 8 to 40 inches wide) cutting metamorphosed, Cretaceous, sedimentary formations. Oxidized near the surface with enrichment of gold and silver. The main vein occupies a contact fissure between quartzite and limestone. The ore body is 1.02 meters wide.
Workings include shallow shafts, cross-cut, with tunnels and stopes, and open cuts, totaling 365.76 meters in length and 51.82 meters deep. Operated from 1927 through 1941. It produced some 200 tons of ore averaging about 0.6 oz. Au/T, 15 oz. Ag/T, 0.7% Cu, and 4% Pb. Considerable zinc was not recovered.
