In 1961, Stratford Granite Association and the Compagnie de Granite Éternité Ltée opened the first quarries 1 and 2 on lot 9 on top of Mount Aylmer, Stratford, Qc. 2.5 miles (ca. 4 km) southwest of Stratford Centre and operated on an intermittent basis, closing in 1998.
The quarries operated to produce funeral monuments because of the fine grain of the granite. They lie within the Devonian Aylmer granitic pluton, comprising granite, biotite granodiorite, granitic dykes and minor quartz veins.
