A former small underground Au-Cu-Ag mine located near Ruby in the center E½E½ sec. 21, and in the west-central (center of W½W½) sec. 22, T.22S., R.10E, 1.2 miles SE of Fraguita Peak (elevation 5369), and at the head of Yellow Jacket Wash; about 2 miles W of Oro Blanco Ranch, on private land. One of the oldest mines in the area dating back to the 1800's. Produced 1900 - 1938. Owned at times, or in part, by C.A. Johnson (1959); Mr. William C. Bradbury; and, Mr. Charlie Lemons and Mr. B. Johnson, Apache International Mining Co. (1979). Operated by the Pittsburgh Co. (1895); the Yellow Jacket Mines Co. (1907); T.E. Kelso (1932 and 1933); Rear and Setka (1934); the North Star Mines, Inc. (1938). Comprised of two patented claims: (Yellow Jacket and the Phoenix) and six unpatented claims; the Yellow Jacket claim was patented in 1883, and the Phoenix claim in 1887.

Mineralization is a lensing quartz vein, approximately 3 feet (1 meter) wide, along a major fault zone, 10-30 feet (9.14 meters) wide, containing disseminated pyrite and sparse base metal sulfides, largely oxidized with supergene enrichment of gold and silver. The ore zone strikes NW-SE and dips steeply NE. The wall rock is Jurassic welded tuff cut by rhyolite dikes. 200+ tons of ore averaging about 1.5 oz/ton Au, 1.6 oz/ton Ag, minor Cu and silver: gold ratio about 9:1.

The vein is in a shear zone 10 to 30 feet wide containing blocks of dark bluish gray quartz; rhyolite dikes have intruded the vein and adjacent wall rocks. Three main parallel veins intersected by cross faults (Yellow Jacket, Phoenix, and Green Veins). The Yellow Jacket vein averages 20 feet wide and dips 70 NE; the Phoenix Vein averages 11 feet wide and dips 85 SW; the Green Vein averages 2 feet wide and dips 40 NE. The claims cover about 40 acres.

Local structures include NW-trending fault zones. Tectonic elements include block faulting. Poor surface exposures; no sub-surface data; property traversed by 2 parallel diabase dikes that strike NW-SE and dip nearly vertically to the NE.

Workings include a shaft to 120 deep plus over 400 feet of drifts and tunnels (1881). Workings now caved consists of a main shaft (250 feet deep) that serves four levels involving 1200 feet of drifts and short cross cuts; a second shaft (62 feet deep); and 200 feet of crosscuts NW of the main shaft. Workings total 365.76 meters in length and 76.2 meters deep. One of the oldest mines of the district dating back to the 1800's and intermittently productive through 1938. Total estimated and recorded production would be some 200 or more tons of ore averaging about 1.5 oz. Au/T, 1.6 oz. Ag/T, and minor Cu. A 10-stamp mill was erected on the property.
