A former medium sized underground Au-Ag-Cu-Pb-Zn mine located in the SW¼SW¼ sec. 17, T.23S., R.11E., about ¾ mile North of the Tres Amigos Mine and about 4 miles West of Ruby, on National Forest land. Discovered 1850. Produced 1873- ?, 1936-1948, and closed 1962. Owned at times, or in part, by the Oro Blanco Mining Co.; Fernald. Owned by the Legend Group, Ltd. (circa 1930-1934); Artesia Investment Co.; and the Oro Blanco Mines Co. Operated by Rayrock Mines Inc. Elko, NV; Highland Crow Resources Ltd. Vancouver, British Columbia (1986). Past operators include: Fred Flickett (1946), Artesia Investment Co. (1940-1942); P. W. Wells (1938), B.W. and C.W. Parks (1962). 1984-86: Ewing, Rayrock and Highland hold different parts of the property.
Mineralization is a lensing NW-trending fissure zone of brecciated and pulverized Tertiary volcanics cemented by finely-crystalline quartz containing fine-grain gold and silver with sparse oxidized base metal sulfides and iron and manganese oxides. The ore zone strikes N35W and dips vertically. Contact with the lower conglomerate member of the Oro Blanco Formation is to the south of the mine.
Workings include a 265 foot (80.77 meters) deep shaft and adit with a 1,500 foot long plus drift NW-ward on the 125 level that contains several stopes up to 50 feet wide and 100 or more feet high. A 700 foot crosscut drift SW-ward cuts 3 additional mineralized shear zones explored by short drifts. The shaft contains water to the 150 foot level; 125-foot level has the most workings, including several stopes. Rayrock did underground rehabilitation, sampling and surface drilling; Highland did surface drilling; Ewing leached dump material.
