A former surface and underground Au-Ag-Cu-Mn-Ba-Pb (Be) mine located on 12 original claims plus an additional 115 claims, in the NE¼ sec. 1, T1S, R15W (protracted), SW of Salome, which is in La Paz County, on the southern margin of the Little Horn Mountains, on federal land. Started 1926 or 27. Owned by the Sheep Tanks Mines Co.; Anozira Mining Co., later the Sheep Tanks Consolidated Mining Co. (1931- ).
Mineralization in the Sheep Tanks Mines is made up of five major veins, the Resolution vein (which is the main ore body), Lower Tunnel vein, Smyrna vein, Black Eagle vein, and the Lead vein. The Resolution vein dips northward at a low angle and has been stepped down by later faults. It is at least 800 feet (243.8 meters) long north to south by 700 feet (213.36 meters) broad east to west and ranges from a few inches to about 40 feet (12.19 meters) in thickness. Ore control was the fault zone. When the hydrothermal solutions reached the breccia on the Resolution claim, they encountered a flat, dipping fault zone with a relatively impervious cover that caused them to spread outward along the zones of greater permeability. The best oreshoot is near the top of it's western portion. It is a gold and silver vein with local oxidized copper, and spotty, local argentiferous lead mineralization in lensing, irregular masses and streaks with gangue of quartz, pyrolusite, brecciated wall rock, iron oxides and barite in fault and shear veins cutting Tertiary andesitic volcanics intruded by diorite porphyry. The wall rocks are intensely silicified, chloritized, and sericitized.
Workings include shaft, tunnel, and open pit operations. There are several hundreds of feet of adit tunnels at various levels, open stopes and raises to a depth of 74.07 meters. Workings on the Sheep Tanks property include a tunnel some 1450 feet long, that penetrates the ridge south of camp; several hundred feet of branch tunnels and raises from this level; a few hundred feet of workings on levels 170, 183, 200, 237, and 243 feet above the long tunnel; some 225 feet of tunnels on the Black Eagle claim; and many short tunnels and shallow pits. A 100 ton cyanide mill was erected. This mine was discovered in the early 1900's but was not developed until 1926. Sporadic production, from 1929 through 1942, amounted to some 17,400 tons of ore averaging about 1.2 oz. Au/T, 2.3 oz. Ag.T and some copper; yield was 1,303.27 oz. Au, 12,525 oz. Ag and a little copper (to 1929). In 1933, 3 carloads of ore were shipped.
