A former small underground Pb-Ag-Au mine located in North-central sec. 12, T.20S., R.27E, about 2.5 miles N of Swisshelm Mountain, on private land. Discovered 1889. Owned at times, or in part, by the Swisshelm Gold Silver Co., Swisshelm Mountain Gold & Silver Mining Co., Swisshelm Development Co., Conan Mining Corp. and the Gold Metals Consolidated Mining Co.
Mineralization is irregular, oxidized orebodies of galena as replacements in an overthrust block of Pennsylvanian-Permian Naco Group limestone. Ore control was fault and fracture zones. Alteration was strong oxidation. On the upthrown side of NW-trending faults.
Local structures include the Naco Group rocks which strike NW, and NNW thrust faults in Swisshelms overthrust with the Naco group over rhyolite porphyry.
Workings include a shaft and adit. About 2,000 tons of ore were produced intermittently from operations in the 1880's and in 1918 to 1958.
Development of the Mammoth and Whale claims is tied to the development of the Mountain Queen claim to the south.
