A former small underground Cu-Ag-Fe-Pb-Au-Zn-Ti mine located in the southern ½ secs. 19, 20, northern ½ secs. 29, 30, T.18S., R.24E. (Black Diamond Peak 7.5 minute topo map), about 8 miles SW from Pearce, and about 5 miles NW of Courtland, on private land. The property consisted of 3 patented claims and 4 unpatented claims in 1944. Discovered 1892. First produced 1899. Produced intermittently during the period 1903-1957. Owned by the Black Diamond Copper Mining Co. and Mr. Keith Englander. Operated by Pennerill and Wes, Pennington (1944); and, D.D. Mattox. The locality also has placers which occur in Placerita and French Creeks, mainly in the vicinity of their junction. Location is general for the placer group.
Mineralization is sulfides and copper carbonates and oxides with magnetite and hematite in irregular, tabular, pyrometasomatic bodies in silicated Mississippian Escabrosa Limestone and in contact zones between limestone and porphyry, and along fractures parallel to the contact, N50W. The overlying gossan zone is up to 150 feet (47 meters) thick.
Local structures include east-dipping, NW-trending thrust sheets. The beds in the mine area are of variable dip due to extensive thrusting. Complex Tertiary faulting of Paleozoic and Cretaceous sediments; Tertiary intrusives.
Workings include a shaft and tunnels to a depth of 182.88 meters. Development is by 4 tunnels being connected by winzes and chutes, and several shafts; two major working levels - upper Dividend and lower Barge. At least 7,000 tons of ore were produced intermittently from 1903 to about 1957.
