A former small underground Cu-Zn-Ag-Pb-Mo-Bi-Be-Baryte mine located in the SW ¼ sec. 23 (& NW¼ sec. 26 ?), T.15S., R.22E. (Dragoon 7.5 minute topo map), ¾ mile NW of the town of Johnson, 1.7 km SE of Johnson Peak, on private land. Discovered 1881. First produced 1882. Operated at times by the Black Prince Copper Co., Arizona Consolidated Mining Co., Arizona United Mining Corp., Cobriza Mines Development Co., Mason Copper Co., United Development Co., and the Coronado Copper & Zinc Co.

Mineralization is argentiferous copper carbonates and copper and zinc sulfides with pyrite in pyrometasomatic chimney and manto deposits in faulted and fractured Cambrian Abrigo (top of middle member) and Devonian Martin limestone beds. Ore control was by a series of small displacement pre-intrusive faults. Ore concentration was replacement in favorable beds at the intersections with faults. Alteration was limestone metamorphosed to tactite, either diopside- or garnet-rich. An associated rock unit is the Texas Canyon Quartz Monzonite. The ore zone is 121.92 meters long, 13.72 meters wide and 7.62 meters thick, and plunges approximatety E-W. The largest chimney is 400 by 45 by 25 feet; tabular bodies are smaller than chimneys at a maximum of 10 feet thick.

Local structures include a massive fracture system; NE-tilting Tertiary block faulting; faults and fractures.

Workings are quite entensive and feature a shaft(s). They total 198.12 meters in length and 182.88 meters in depth. There were extensive shaft workings; partly caved inclines and underhand stopes following down dip of favorable beds. The Republic and Mammoth have had common ownership at least since 1900, by which time they were developed by surface cuts and shallow inclined shafts down the dip of the cropping ore bodies. In 1903 the Black Prince Copper Co. extended the Mammoth shaft to 270 feet. Connected with the Moore shaft workings. A total of some 200,000 tons of ore were produced intermittently 1882-1949. The production record was combined with that of the Republic Mine, but the Mammoth produced much less than the Republic, although more than the intervening Copper Chief. ABGMT-USBM production figures are included under the Republic-Mammoth-Moore.
