Köppen climate type:
Located in the centre of the Rift Valley, approximately 90 km North of Nairobi. Mount Suswa is a large (>700 km2) trachytic shield volcano with two nested summit calderas that erupted peralkaline trachyte and phonolite lavas and tuffs from approximately 240 to <10 ka.
A Halocene shield volcano that is 2,356 meters (7,730 feet) high. It is the southernmost caldera of the Kenya rift system. Several eruptions have created a variety of interesting features. The latest eruptions may be as recent as the early 1900s. The outer crater is approximately 10km in diameter and is breached on its south and east sides where lava flows poured down the slopes. Many of the less viscous pahoehoe flows are honeycombed with caves.
Guano was mined in lava tubes (lava caves).
An inner crater is 4-5 kms in diameter and contains a raft-like structure (tilted island block of caldera floor lava flows) surrounded by a deep "moat".
