The Lakehurst Zirconium Mine is near Van Hiseville, New Jersey. Historically the site has been part of the Lakehurst area. The site was first serendipitously discovered in 1957. First production was in 1962 and the last was in 1976. NOTE: This mining operation is on the same formation and operational area as the Glidden-Durkee Titanium Mine.

Mineralization is a Zr-Ti deposit hosted in a medium-grained, poorly sorted quartz sandstone partly consolidated. The average thickness is 7 meters. The average grade was originally 4-5% HM of which 80-85% was ilmenite + leucoxene and 3% rutile. The ore mined is composed of ilmenite. 0.18% is zircon in the form of sand. The mineralization at this location is from the Pliocene epoch 5.33 to 2.58 million years ago. Local rocks include the sand & gravel of the Cohansey Formation.

The deposit occurs in a large alkaline pipe (6 km diameter). It is a lateritic mantle rich in anatase (after perovskite) and apatite. The concentration is a result of removal of weathered products, particularly diopside from the original pyroxenite. The average depth of weathering is 60 meters with a maximum of 200 meters. There are 5 major weathering zones in the profile, of which the second is rich in anatase, and the third rich in anatase and apatite (first - argillaceous sterile capping, fourth - apatite ore, fifth - partially weathered sterile rock.

Production was formerly 90,000 metric ton per year total heavy minerals.
