An active quarry located in the NE¼, section 7, Ludlow Falls, Union Township. There are several rock formations exposed at this locality. The oldest geological formation is the Brassfield Formation and the youngest is the Springfield Dolomite Formation, Lockport Group (Mikulic et al., 2012; Carlson, 2015). All the geological formations at the quarry are Silurian age.
Stone and aggregate quarrying in the region dates back to the early 1900s as small quarries were opened along the banks of Ludlow Creek. The former Maxwell Stone Co. Quarry, operated during the late 1890s to approximately the early 1920s was slightly east to where the current Barrett Paving Materials quarry is currently operating (Bownocker, 1915; Prosser, 1916).
The active Barrett Paving Materials Inc. Ludlow Falls Quarry started operations in the 1960s on the western side of Davis Road. Quarrying continued on the western side of Davis Road until 2015-2016, when this portion of the quarry was starting to flood. The offices of the quarry are still on the western side even though quarrying has stopped. Barrett Paving Materials started quarrying on the eastern side of Davis Road in the 1990s and this portion of the quarry is still active.
Mineralization was not reported in any historical sources, so the quarry was omitted in the first edition of Minerals of Ohio. In the second edition of Minerals of Ohio, Joseph Vasichko reported crystals and masses of colorless, white and brown calcite; saddle-shaped crystals of pearly-white, pink and yellow dolomite; and brassy-yellow crystals of marcasite (Carlson, 2015).
Mikulic et al. (2015) reported that the trilobite species, Gravicalymene celebra, was found in the upper levels of the quarry in the Springfield Dolomite Formation and that trilobites were fairly rare at this locality.
