Monte Agruxau

Monte Agruxiau, Mine concession for zinc.
Located at the foot of Monte Agruxiau, to the west of the Monteponi mine.
Some unsuccessful prospecting works dated back to the 1820s. On March 6, 1876 a concession for the exploitation of zinc ores was granted to the Belgian company Société Anonyme de la Vieille Montagne in joint venture with the company Société Civile des Mines d'Iglesias.

Monte Agruxiau, Iglesias, South Sardinia Province, Sardinia, Italy

Agruxiau was a calamime mine. The ores were very rich, about 48% zinc.
The mine operation was done via shafts and galleries equipped with rails.
There were 3 furnaces for calcining the calamine. There was also a steam-driven wash plant. Figures from the period 1867-1870 indicate a production of 10,000 tons per year. The ores were transported to San Giovanni and from there to Porto Vesme for transport to the VM locations.
