Thomas Bell and Robert Atkinson were the main driving forces in establishing the Queen Gold Mining Company in 1878. Mine manager is Charles Klug.
Complaints were made in local newspapers by several shareholders (or one shareholder several times), the company was finding apparently much gold but no dividends were being issued. In 1881, the company was raising between 400 to 450 tonnes of ore per fortnight. For the last six months in 1881, the company produced 4857 tonnes of ore yielding 1068 ounces of gold.
Robert Atkinson died early 1882. Staff stated Atkinson had kept the finances to himself, and subsequently auditors found money missing.
The workings were connected to the United Black Hill underground workings for ventilation. January 1882, a 225 ounce nugget was uncovered. After the initial complaints, much gold was found and dividends issued. In 1883, when gold grades decreased the company approached the Black Hill Company for a decrease in royalties from 15% to 10%. The long suffering Black Hill Company refused stating the Queen Company had taken over a shaft in good repair, and machinery supplied by the Black Hill Company; had promised to sink the shaft 100 feet per year which had not happened; and paid handsome dividends to shareholders while no money was kept for any difficult times. The Queen Company decided to wind up.
In November 1886 some leading Ballarat capitalists formed the Queen Jubilee Gold Mining Company to take over the tribute lease abandoned by the Queen Company at 25 acres. The shaft was drained. The lease also included part of the North Queen lease immediately to the north. Only one year later it is reported the company had sunk the shaft a further 100 feet to a depth of 850 feet, with drives east and west at the 840 foot level. Little payable stone was found and operations were suspended. The following year the shaft is idle with desultory mining in shallow ground.
