Surprise Mine (Mahoney Shaft #1), Surprise Mine #2


Surprise Mine (Mahoney Shaft #1), at 1,890 m (6,201 ft) elevation, was one of a number of small-scale operations located approximately 15 km (9.5 miles) SE of the small community settlement of Dwyer and 85 km (53 miles) N of the Mexican border. Historically it has been part of the Cookes Peak Mining District. Silver was discovered in the range north of Cookes Peak in 1876 and the mining district was established in 1880, with silver, lead, and zinc mined there until 1967. Initially, the Surprise Mine worked carbonate-hosted lead-zinc replacement deposits for silver and lead, but it subsequently became part of the Desdemona Group with Asarco (American Smelting And Refining Company) working the group of mines for silver, copper, gold, lead and zinc. Fluorite was also found at the Surprise Mine.

Discovered in 2017 and located at 32.5579000, -107.7298000, approximately 530 m (1,742 ft) WSW of Surprise Mine (Mahoney Shaft #1), Surprise Mine #2 is a 9.22-acre active mining claim owned by Philip C Simmons and Neil Currie. This new deposit produces collectible fluorite specimens, octahedral and cube, in a variety of colours including blue, green, purple, raspberry and colourless.
