In 1980, a contractor digging hit an oil seep here. Initially a dark green liquid flowed by the road between a swampy area and the high water mark of the bay. When investigated a short time later by Cook, only oily impregnated sand remained.
Cook determined it to be a natural 'mature' hydrocarbon, rather than a spill by human action. While local rocks are unpromising for oil, it has been found nearby in the Great Southern Basin. Cook suggests a probable fault cutting the local diorite acts as a conduit for the oil.
