Rocky River and its east and west branches contain numerous shale outcrops belonging to the Devonian aged Cleveland Shale Formation and Bedford Shale. These outcrops are described in detail by Prosser (1912), Cushing et al. (1931, p. 35-40), and Van Horn and Van Horn (1933). Carlson (1991, p. 123, 2015, p. 225) lists this locality as .8 mile north of the intersection of Columbia Road and John Road in Olmsted Township. Review of maps actually places this locality in North Olmsted. The outcrop is visible on aerial maps along an unnamed tributary of the West Branch Rocky River.
This locality was first visited by Charles Prosser (1912, p. 476-477). Prosser documented the shales beds as a gradual transition from the Cleveland Shale to the Bedford Shale Formation. The transistion points showed "an inch of marcasite" between the two formations. Ernest Carlson (1991, p. 123) visited the site later and determined that the "marcasite" layer was in fact pyrite.
Van Horn and Van Horn (1933, p. 291) shows a pyrite specimen that they collected along the Bedford Shale near Olmsted Falls. Carlson (1991) assumed that that this was probably the locality where it was collected.
