A gold and silver mine started in 1925 and closed in 1965. The mine was ultimately closed in 1965 and then reopened for tourism.

It worked the low-temperature veins in altered volcanic rocks. Mining was made difficult by underground hot springs. In 1958, production was 185 kg of Au and 1,283 kg of Ag, from ore averaging 10.0 g/t Au and 69 g/t Ag. (Ref: Geological Survey of Japan, 1960).

Toi was the second most productive gold mine in Japan, after the gold mine of Sado in Niigata Prefecture.

Small-scale gold mining is said to have started at Toi around 1370.
