The Miami River Stone Co. Quarry is an active quarry for building stone and aggregate located in the E ½ of Section 29 and the W ½ of Section 23, Kirkwood, Orange Township, Shelby County. The rocks exposed in the quarry are identified as part of the Brassfield Formation, the Dayton Formation and the Springfield Formation (Carlson, 2015, p. 161).
The modern day operation quarry is in fact a product of two companies that merged in 1997: the old Miami River Stone Co. and the Sidney Sand and Gravel Company. The latter was established in 1922 by F.E. Milligan and William F. Milligan, while the former was established in 1955 by Ralph Kerr and was then later owned and operated by Russell Comer (Barnum, D.).
In 1972, the old Miami River Stone Company was sold to B&G Bituminous (which was owned by Barrett Paving Materials, Inc.) and the Sidney Sand and Gravel Company was brought on to assist as a fifty percent partner (Barnum, D.).
In 1997, the two companies decided to consolidate into the “new” Miami River Stone Company, which is still operated by both the Milligan and Comer families. Barrett Paving Materials also continues to operate out of the quarry also (Barnum, D.).
This locality was added in the second edition of Ernest Carlson’s Minerals of Ohio (2015). The locality was noted for producing yellowish-brown crystals of sphalerite, saddle-shape crystals of dolomite, iridescent crystals of marcasite, white crystals of calcite and finely crystalline layers of pyrite.
