One of seventeen public fossicking sites on the South Island, where gold can be found in streams without the need for a permit. Hand held tools, like panning dishes, picks, shovels, and small sluice boxes only allowed. Expect a lot of hard work in cold water for a few specks.
The site encompasses the upper reaches to its headwaters of Jones Creek. It can be accessed from the Ross information centre, via a short road south up the creek, with the permit area south where the road ends. The information centre can provide more details.
The area also contains Jones Flat where much mining occurred in the latter half of the 19th Century, now a water filled pit from recent modern mining. The shoreline of the lake also contains some historic buildings, information signs, picnic area, and a short loop trail past some mining relics of days gone by. The site is at the eastern end of Ross.
