The Dunganville meteorite is the ninth, and largest meteorite found in New Zealand up to the reference date (2016-mineral specimen museum Shantytown).
Ted Dowie of Greymouth was prospecting for gold and nephrite in a creek bed, 2 kilometres east north-east of the abandoned gold mining settlement of Dunganville. In January 1976 he located an unusual looking rock in the creek bed, which was subsequently proved to be a meteorite. A further search recovered 68 pieces of weathered crust.
It is a coarse octahedrite, class OG, chemical group 1. It weighs 50.2 kg, with dimensions 35 x 21 x 16 cms. The bulk of the material is held by the Canterbury Museum at Christchurch, with a lesser amount with the New Zealand Geological Survey.
