Ordinary chondrite, black (L/LL6)
Fall, 10 July 1916, 11hrs; 1.711 kg
After detonations several stones fell near 3 villages within ~10 km of each other. The interior of the stone is blackened from shock dispersion of tiny metal grains. Compositionally, bulk iron contents (22.4 wt% Fe), equilibrated olivine (Fa26.2) and low Ca-pyroxenes are intermediate between the L-chondrite geochemical group. In spite of its interior blackening, Sultanpur meteorite has a somewhat ancient Pb-Th/He age of 4.35 Ga suggesting that its most disruptive collisions may have occurred during the more ancient epochs of solar system history.
The main mass is with Geological Survey of India (Calcutta) with a small mass at the American Museum of Natural History (New York).
