Yellowstone National Park
Amethyst Mountain is a major peak in Yellowstone National Park and part of a northwest-southeast ridge that lies between the Lamar River to the northeast and Deep Creek to the southwest within Park County, Wyoming. The rocks exposed at the locality are identified as the Eocene Lamar River Formation, itself part of the Absaroka Volcanic Supergroup. Its stated elevation is 2,929 meters (9,609 feet).
The locality was named in 1872 by the United States Geological Survey because amethyst, opal and petrified wood were found in abundance (Gannett, 1905).
