The Alma, Degraff and other mines controlled by the Mon-Ark Mining Co. comprise one of the more important groups of zinc-lead mines in Christian County, Mo. The mines were first operated in 1857 and produced more than 5 million pounds of lead from rich, shallow ore deposits.
The first operations, at this property, which has been the principal producer of a group known as the Elk Valley mines, were started in 1857. Lead mining from surface cuts and shallow underground workings before 1894 produced about 2,500 tons of lead, 40 percent of which was from the 90-foot level of the Alma mine. In 1917 the property was leased to the San Toy Mining Co., and a new shaft was sunk to the 196-foot level. The company mined from the 135- and 160-foot levels during the period between 1918 and 1920. In 1937, F. R. Harris and G. M. Elliot obtained leases on the property and started exploration by churn drilling. In 1939 Harris and Elliot assigned their rights to the Mon-Ark Mining Co. of Delaware, which continued the exploration and, during the latter part of 1941, built a concentration plant with a capacity of 20 tons an hour. Periodic operation of the plant during 1942 and 1943 has produced around 132 tons of 60-percent zinc concentrate.
