In 1963 a Mr. W. R. Barton noticed an ugly, rusted stone which had been on the farm for years and placed it in his wife's rock garden — trying to play a prank on her because of her great interest in the recent sale of the Akron (1961) chondrite. Mrs. Barton said nothing, but sent a small sample to Glen I. Huss for identification. The prankster had inadvertently outfoxed himself.
The stone roughly resembles an elongated, flat-top pyramid with a base measuring 25.7 cm in its longest dimension. Only portions of the original fusion crust remain. One slightly concave side exhibits moderately well developed pits. No flight markings are present. The meteorite is greatly weathered, but its dominant phases are (or once were) olivine, pyroxene, Fe-Ni metal and troilite. Minor chromite, secondary pentlandite, and limonite are also present. Olivine composition (Fa23) and total iron content (Fe ~20.6 wt%) are characteristic of L chondrites. Olivine is abundant as larger fractured crystals, in chondrules, and in ground mass. Chondrules, usually metal-free, are prominent and distinct with radial pyroxene (RP) textures most common. Chondrule sizes are in the 0.4 mm - 4 mm diameter range. Within less weathered regions kamacite and taenite are usually intergrown. Devitrified olivine is indicative of previous shock and subsequent metamorphism.
