Lover Gill Mine is a small lead mine situated in a ravine on the side of Stags Fell, opposite the famous Buttertubs Pass landmark which sits on the top of the moors between Wensleydale and Swaledale, and it lies just north of the larger Providence Mine.
The mine was first worked around 1715, and is recorded to have produced around 37 tons of lead ore between 1751 and 1755, working a northern continuation of the Stags fell vein.
The vein was also worked by hushing and open casting in the Main Limestone opposite Buttertubs. Keartons Level, which had been driven on the vein in the Underset Limestone by 1843, was re-opened by the South Swaledale Lead Mining Company Ltd in 1868. The mine was last worked around 1871.
Dunham mentions that the lead from Lover Gill had an extremely high silver content, with samples tested giving values exceeding 2000 ppm, ''raising the question of a possible secondary enrichment of this element.''
The coordinates given by Dunham are for the level adit.
